Hate Group Slams JC Penney for Hiring Ellen DeGeneres as Spokesperson

February 1, 2012

One Million Moms, a front for the anti-gay hate group American Family Association, says “JC Penney Offends Traditional Families Again” for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as JC Penney’s new spokesperson. They said:

Recently JC Penney announced that comedian Ellen Degeneres will be the company’s new spokesperson. Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.

Apparently being “an open homosexual” and shopping at JC Penney is incompatible. I think that would be news to many people who shop here, as well as to the company.

Washington State on the Cusp of Marriage Equality

February 1, 2012

Washington state is poised to implement marriage equality laws that would legalize same sex marriage. Reuters reports that the state Senate is expected to pass a marriage equality bill tonight. Passage in the state House of Representatives is “virtually assured” and “Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat in her final year in office, announced last month she was backing the gay marriage bill.”

Microsoft, Nike, Starbucks and other local corporate powerhouses have supported the legislation.

Madonna Week Commences With New Album Art

February 1, 2012

Yes, it’s technically Superbowl week, leading up to Superbowl Sunday. But for some of us, the Superbowl will be all about Madonna’s half-time show. And so I’ve dubbed this “Madonna Week.”

We start Madonna Week with the cover art for her forthcoming album, MDNA.

On Thursday, her new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin'” will premiere on American Idol before hitting iTunes on Friday. The single features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Republican Congressman Tries to Ban Same-Sex Marriage Ceremonies on Military Bases

February 1, 2012

I didn’t realize there was a sudden boom in lesbian and gay people getting married on military bases, but Military.com reports that a Republican congressman from Kansas is terrified of the prospect. They said:

Kansas Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp is sponsoring a bill that stipulates the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” cannot be used to force chaplains to do anything against their beliefs, he said in an announcement Friday, including marrying gay partners.

“It will also protect the freedom of those in the military to express vocally the tenets of their faiths. And it will make certain that our military facilities are not used in contravention to the federal Defense of Marriage Act,” he said. “Military installations exist to carry out the national defense of our nation, not to facilitate a narrow social agenda.”

The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network says the proposed bull is “another round of resistance tactics that have already been rejected by Congress and the American people.” I would add that this is another example of the right wing claiming that equal rights for LGBT people mean the equal rights of bigots are at risk.
